If you’re moving, changing insurance, or just want a pharmacy that’s easier to get to, transferring your prescriptions doesn’t have to be complicated. Most of the work happens between the two pharmacies, not on your end.

Here’s what the process actually looks like.

Why people switch pharmacies

The reasons are usually simple: a new home, a new job, a pharmacy closer to family, or wanting your doctor visits and prescriptions handled in the same place. None of these need a special explanation. Your prescription history belongs to you, and you can move it whenever it makes sense for you.

What you need to start a transfer

You don’t need permission from your current pharmacy, and in most cases you won’t need to visit them in person. To start a transfer, it helps to have on hand:

If you’re not sure exactly what you’re taking or at what dose, that’s fine too. Your new pharmacy can usually track it down once they know where your prescriptions currently are.

How the transfer actually works

Once you give your new pharmacy the details, they contact your previous pharmacy directly and request the prescription information. This is a routine, everyday request between pharmacies. Your old pharmacy handles dozens of these a month and doesn’t need an explanation from you.

The receiving pharmacy then verifies the details, checks for anything that needs a pharmacist’s attention (an interaction, a prescription close to running out, a refill that needs renewing), and gets everything ready for pickup.

Controlled substances are handled a little differently under provincial regulation and may need an extra step or a call to your prescriber. Your pharmacist will tell you if that applies to any of your medications.

How long does it take?

Timing depends mostly on how quickly your previous pharmacy responds. Many transfers are ready within a day or two. If a prescription needs to be confirmed with your doctor first, it can take a bit longer. If you’re close to running out of something, mention that when you call. Pharmacies generally prioritize requests where timing matters.

What to tell your new pharmacist

When you transfer, it’s worth mentioning a few things beyond your prescription list: any allergies, other medications or supplements you’re taking (including ones from a different pharmacy), and any refills that are coming due soon. It helps your new pharmacist do a proper safety check and set up your refill schedule correctly from day one.

If you’re managing several prescriptions on different refill cycles, ask about syncing your refill dates. Lining everything up to one pickup date means fewer trips back and forth over the course of a month.

Does it cost anything?

No. Transferring a prescription is a standard administrative request between pharmacies, not a billable service. You shouldn’t be charged to move your prescriptions, whether you’re transferring one medication or your entire list.

What about vitamins and over-the-counter products?

Vitamins, supplements, and over-the-counter products generally aren’t “transferred” the way prescriptions are, since they’re not tied to a specific pharmacy. Still, it’s worth mentioning anything you take regularly when you set up your account at a new pharmacy. It helps your pharmacist catch interactions that a prescription list alone wouldn’t show.
