Holter Monitor

Your Heart, Monitored Continuously

A standard ECG records only a brief snapshot of your heart’s activity, typically about 10 seconds. While helpful, some rhythm issues occur intermittently and may not appear during a short test.
A Holter monitor provides a more complete picture by continuously recording your heart’s electrical activity over 24 to 48 hours. A small portable device is worn throughout your normal daily activities, including sleep and exercise.
Once returned, your physician reviews the full recording to identify any irregular heart rhythms that may otherwise be missed. It is a simple, painless, and highly effective diagnostic tool.

What Is a Holter Monitor?

A Holter monitor is a small battery-powered device that continuously records your heart rhythm over 24 to 48 hours. Adhesive electrodes placed on your chest connect to a portable recorder that you can wear in a pocket or clip to your belt. It is a widely used and reliable tool for detecting intermittent heart rhythm abnormalities that may not appear during a standard ECG.
Detects Arrhythmias
Identifies irregular heart rhythms — whether fast, slow, or skipped beats — that may not be captured during a standard in-office ECG.
24 to 48 Hour Recording
Continuously captures your heart’s activity during everyday life, including sleep, exercise, meals, and periods of stress, for a complete picture of your heart rhythm.
Completely Painless
No needles, no discomfort. The device is light and barely noticeable once you get used to wearing it.

When Is a Holter Monitor Needed?

Your provider may recommend a Holter monitor if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms or situations.
Heart Palpitations
That fluttering, racing, or pounding feeling in your chest that comes and goes unpredictably.
Unexplained Dizziness
Lightheadedness or feeling like you might faint, especially if episodes come and go without warning.
Shortness of Breath
Breathlessness during routine activities that may be linked to an underlying heart rhythm issue.
Fainting Spells
Syncope or near-syncope episodes that could indicate a dangerous rhythm disturbance.
Medication Monitoring
Checking whether heart medications are working effectively and maintaining a normal rhythm.
Post-Procedure Follow-Up
Monitoring heart rhythm after cardiac procedures, ablations, or changes to your treatment plan.

What to Expect

The process is simple. Here is what happens from start to finish.
Device Fitting
Small adhesive electrodes are placed on your chest, connected to a compact recorder. The setup takes about 15 minutes. Our staff shows you how to wear it comfortably.
Live Your Normal Day
Continue your usual routine — work, meals, light exercise, and sleep. The monitor is designed to record your heart activity during real-life conditions, not just at rest in a clinic. Keep a brief diary of your activities and any symptoms to help correlate with the recording.
Return the Device
After 24 to 48 hours, come back to the clinic and drop off the monitor.
Results & Follow-Up
Your physician analyzes the recording, correlates it with your symptom diary, and discusses findings with you at a follow-up appointment. If anything needs attention, your provider will advise you as soon as possible.
