What Is a Holter Monitor?

A Holter monitor is a small battery-powered device that continuously records your heart rhythm over 24 to 48 hours. Adhesive electrodes placed on your chest connect to a portable recorder that you can wear in a pocket or clip to your belt. It is a widely used and reliable tool for detecting intermittent heart rhythm abnormalities that may not appear during a standard ECG.

Your provider may recommend a Holter monitor if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms or situations.

Live Your Normal Day
Continue your usual routine — work, meals, light exercise, and sleep. The monitor is designed to record your heart activity during real-life conditions, not just at rest in a clinic. Keep a brief diary of your activities and any symptoms to help correlate with the recording.
Return the Device
After 24 to 48 hours, come back to the clinic and drop off the monitor.
Results & Follow-Up
Your physician analyzes the recording, correlates it with your symptom diary, and discusses findings with you at a follow-up appointment. If anything needs attention, your provider will advise you as soon as possible.

No. The device is small and lightweight. You can go about most daily activities — just avoid getting it wet.

Your provider orders the test based on your symptoms. We fit the device at the clinic and you return it after 24 to 48 hours. Your provider then reviews the recording and discusses findings at a follow-up appointment.
